Do you qualify for a subsidy?

Many Colorado households pay less than they expect

Connect for Health Colorado offers a quick cost plan finder where residents can apply for Premium Tax Credits to reduce their monthly costs.

The marketplace also provides cost-sharing reductions, which are healthcare discounts available on silver-level plans. These lower what you pay when you actually use your coverage.

Health Matters Insurance is a Connect for Health Colorado Enrollment Center in Pueblo, Colorado, staffed with certified brokers. We can check what you qualify for and enroll you in the same appointment.

Two ways to buy

On-Exchange and Off-Exchange plans

Both are real, fully regulated health plans. The difference is where you buy them and whether financial help is available.

Option 1

On-Exchange

Plans purchased through Connect for Health Colorado, the state marketplace. This is the only route to financial assistance.

  • Eligible for Premium Tax Credits that lower your monthly premium
  • Cost-sharing reductions available on silver-level plans
  • Bronze, Silver and Gold metal levels to choose from
  • HMO and EPO network options
  • We enroll you as a certified Connect for Health Colorado broker

Option 2

Off-Exchange

Plans purchased directly from the insurance carrier. Worth comparing if you do not qualify for a subsidy.

  • Bought straight from the carrier, outside the marketplace
  • No Premium Tax Credit or cost-sharing reduction available
  • Sometimes offers plan designs or networks the exchange does not
  • Bronze, Silver and Gold metal levels, HMO and EPO options
  • We compare these against your on-exchange options side by side

Understanding metal levels

Bronze, Silver or Gold?

The metal level describes how you and the plan split costs. It says nothing about the quality of your care.

Bronze

The lowest monthly premium with the highest deductible. Often a fit if you are generally healthy and want protection against a major medical event.

Silver

Middle-of-the-road premiums and deductibles. Silver is also the only level where cost-sharing reductions apply, which can make it the best value if you qualify.

Gold

A higher monthly premium with lower costs when you receive care. Often worth it if you see doctors regularly or take ongoing prescriptions.

Common questions

Questions we hear about family coverage

How do I know if I qualify for help paying for a plan?

Premium Tax Credits are based on your household size and expected income for the year. They are applied through Connect for Health Colorado and lower what you pay each month. Cost-sharing reductions are separate and only attach to silver-level plans.

Both require buying on-exchange. We can check what you qualify for over the phone in a few minutes. Call (719) 406-3166.

What is the difference between an on-exchange and an off-exchange plan?

On-exchange plans are bought through Connect for Health Colorado, the state marketplace, and are the only plans eligible for Premium Tax Credits or cost-sharing reductions. Off-exchange plans are bought directly from the carrier and carry no financial assistance, though they sometimes offer plan designs or networks the marketplace does not.

Which metal level should I pick?

Bronze has the lowest premium and the highest deductible. Gold costs more each month but less when you receive care. Silver sits between the two and is the only level where cost-sharing reductions apply, so it is often the best value for anyone who qualifies for them.

When can I enroll in an individual or family plan?

Open Enrollment through Connect for Health Colorado runs each fall for coverage starting January 1. Outside that window you need a qualifying life event, such as losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby. Those open a Special Enrollment Period, which is usually 60 days long.

Does it cost anything to use a broker?

No. Health Matters is a Connect for Health Colorado Enrollment Center and there is no charge to you for our help comparing plans or enrolling. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through us or on your own.

Which insurance companies can I choose from?

In Pueblo County the carriers are Anthem, Select Health and Kaiser Permanente. Elsewhere in Colorado we can also quote Bright Health, Cigna, Denver Health Medical Plan, Friday, Oscar, Peak Health Alliance and Rocky Mountain Health Plans. Which ones you can pick from depends on your county.

They set up our Medicare plans quickly and were patient with my grandkids too.
